S4 Boys Solo Verse Speaking Competition – 3rd place

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In a year full of lemons, our students rose to the occasion and took up new challenges. The fact that live performances could not take place this year did not stop those eager to participate in the 72nd Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival.

Our students’ imagination and can-do attitude served them well in the solo performance, as one of them snatched the 3rd place, 35 were awarded Merit and 7 attained Proficiency.

4A student Cheng Chun Ho, Weasley, won the 3rd place with his brilliant performance of the poem ‘Geography Lesson’ by Brian Patten, leading his virtual audience on a fantasy voyage towards a heavenly place where life blossoms despite the gloomy reality. Mrs Maryrose Swarbrick, the adjudicator, was pleased with his clear articulation and expressive presentation, whose mood was deliberately set and twisted at the right time. She pointed out that “it was obvious that you understood the meaning and mood… You recognized the ‘turn’ in Stanza 4… This makes such a difference to the understanding and delivery of the following two stanzas.”

If you’ve ever wondered what a fantasyland looks like, and would also like to pay tribute to a teacher who once guided you to appreciate the beauty of our world, this poem may just be the right portal for you to get a taste of travelling again without leaving Hong Kong in person.

Congratulations again to Weasley and all other participants for doing so well in the competition! Let’s keep our heads up and stay hopeful in the pursuit of our dreams!
